Us Deerhound types are really not to sure about the "Pixie" that Jayne and Andy came home with a few days back....Her Birthday is 10th November 2009, She is about the size of my nose and has far to much energy for something so small..... The rest of the time she sleeps and eats!

Boat of the 'Deerhound' rescuing Captain Raphael Semmes, 1864 (c1880). Semmes was a Confederate naval officer during the American Civil War. He commanded the CSS 'Alabama', a prolific commerce raider that captured 69 vessels as prizes. The 'Alabama' was finally sunk after a battle with the Union warship USS 'Kearsage' off Cherbourg, France on 19th June 1864. Semmes and 41 of his crew were rescued by the British yacht 'Deerhound'. Ang's Phrase Book of Deerhound Words.....
BATH: This is a process by which the humans drench the floor, walls and themselves. You can help by shaking vigorously and frequently.

BICYCLES: Two-wheeled exercise machines, invented for dogs to control body fat. To get maximum aerobic benefit, you must hide behind a bush and dash out, bark loudly and run alongside for a few yards; the person then swerves and falls into the bushes, and you jog away. A job well done!

BUMP: The best way to get your human's attention when they are drinking a fresh cup of coffee or tea.

DEAFNESS: This is a malady which affects Deerhounds when their person wants them in and they want to stay out. Symptoms include staring blankly at the person, then running in the opposite direction, or lying down on the sofa.

DOG BED: any large soft, clean surface, such as the white bedspread in the guest room or the newly upholstered couch in the living room.

DROOL: Is what you do when your persons have food and you don't. To do this properly you must sit as close as you can and look sad and let the drool fall to the floor, or better yet, on their laps.

WHEELY BIN: A container which your neighbors put out once a week to test your ingenuity. You must stand on your hind legs and try to push the lid off with your beaky nose. If you do it right you are rewarded with margarine wrappers to shred, beef bones to consume and mouldy crusts of bread.

GOOSE BUMP: A manoeuver to use as a last resort when the Regular Bump doesn't get the attention you require.....especially effective when combined with The Sniff. See above.

LEAN: Every good dog's response to the command "Sit !", especially if your person is dressed for an evening out. Incredibly effective before black-tie events.

LEASH: A strap which attaches to your collar, enabling you to lead your person where you want him/her to go.

LOVE: Is a feeling of intense affection, given freely and without restriction. The best way you can show your love is to wag your tail. If you're lucky, a human will love you in return.

SOFAS: Are to dogs like napkins are to people. After eating it is polite to run up and down the front of the sofa and wipe your whiskers and face clean.

SNIFF: A social custom to use when you greet other dogs. Place your nose as close as you can to the other dogs rear end and inhale deeply, repeat several times until your person makes you stop.

THUNDER: This is a signal that the world is coming to an end. Humans remain amazingly calm during thunderstorms, so it is necessary to warn them of the danger by trembling uncontrollably, panting, rolling your eyes wildly, and following as close as you can to their heels.

WASTEBASKET: This is a Deerhound toy filled with paper, envelopes, and old candy wrapper. When you get bored, turn over the basket and strew the papers all over the house until your person comes home.

He was only seven (7) . So unfair. (DOB 13-07-2001)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Meet the star!

The deerhound list was all abuzz last night when we discovered that young Master Radcliffe is not, in fact, the star of the most recent Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
No, the real star, at least under our rock, is a Scottish Deerhound named Cleod, who plays the dog Padfoot. Well, apparently not exactly a dog. A Harry Potter fanatic friend kindly wrote this summary for me:
The dog is Padfoot. This was the nickname for Sirius Black. Sirius was Harry’s father’s best friend. He is also Harry’s godfather, and spent 12 years in the wizarding prison, Azkaban, for allegedly killing another friend, Peter Pettigrew, and twelve Muggles (non-wizard folk). Sirius is an Animagus, which is the term for a wizard that can change into an animal. He became one to help protect and to keep company his friend, Remus Lupin, who was a werewolf.
While in Hogwarts, the transformations were very bad for Remus, so his friends Sirius, James and Peter became Animagi to keep him company. The reason Sirius is such a big dog is to be able to manage Remus should the werewolf decide to go berserk. James was a stag, Prongs was his name. Peter became a mouse, Wormtail, in order to sneak in and out of places. They called themselves The Marauders, and even made a map of Hogwarts that becomes visible to the user with the words, “I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.” It disappears when the words “Mischief managed” are said.
Cleod’s breeder, Glenis Peach of Britain’s Kilbourne Deerhounds — whose website contains, along with photos of her beautiful hounds and information on the breed, a truly historic pedigree archive and photo gallery of Deerhounds in the UK dating back to the turn of the century. She said that Cleod, who won Best Puppy at Crufts in 2004, had to take a break from the show ring while filming because they dyed him black for his role. Fortunately, it was temporary dye, and washed out when his star turn was over.
Kilbourne hounds are no strangers to the Potterverse. Glenis’ dog Fern was the model for the figure of Padfoot in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Fern was filmed in live action, but what we saw on the screen was a computer generated graphic based on her. Glenis, and friends who have seen the film, assure me that Padfoot is a real live dog this time.

I Know, I Know......we not been blogging for a whilst!!!

Andy has had the laptop.....and well, to be honest we been far to busy sleeping, eating and chasing round the beach in the late mornings to be really bothered. We know our freind Rogue in Scotland has been looking after the internet in our absence, so we know its in safe paws.

After a great deal of thinking about it, I have decided to do it....Andy is, as usual in Sunny Scunthorpe with the laptop..So, I have sneaked upstairs, slithering past the baby gate. To the office where there is a PC...I have left Isla on duty down stairs whilst I post this picture of Andy and Myself, Actually I think it was taken at Isla's birthday party (note the balloons).

Isla just whined so she might be telling me to get down stairs before I get caught....Pity, as I was going to have a quick 40 winks on their water bed whilst they not around...If I could just get my paws round that stat' just a little bit warmer for me.

Any ideas on what the conversation was between us on the pic???

Must go ........Isla is getting more stressed, and I not to fast going down the stairs.

Lemon Birthday Cake

It was hot....."damn hot". I was going to have lots of fun outside with my Birthday treats...Jayne had got us all party hats and ballons. There were meaty burgers, kebabs, Chicken, and a big Happy Bithday banner, but best of all there was a big lemon cake. It was "MY" lemon cake........the problem was as it was sooooo hot I just crashed out on my bed in the shade of the house.

Nodens - later known in Wales as Nudd or Lludd Llaw Ereint (the Silver-Handed) and in Ireland as Nuadu - was the Celtic God of Healing, and the son of Belenos, the Sun God, and Anu, his wife. He had a large shrine at Lydney (Lludd's Island) in Gloucestershire, where the devoted made offerings of small bronze representations of their diseased limbs. He was sometimes identified with the protective Mars or the regenerative Silvanus and his companion and symbol was the dog: a deerhound whose lick could cure the afflicted. An old story explains his connection with amputees. At one time, Nodens was the leader of the gods, but he was wounded in battle and lost his hand. Gofannon, the divine-smith, made him a new one out of Silver - hence his Welsh epithet - though he was still forced to abdicate in favour of his nephew, Lleu Llaw Gyffes (the Skilful-Handed). Later, Nodens was troubled by a constant scream that was heard the eve of every Beltane. He travelled to Gaul, where his brother, Llefelys, was particularly worshipped, to ask his advice. He explained that the cry was made by two fighting dragons. Nodens managed to capture the creatures and imprisoned them deep below Dinas Emrys in Gwynedd. Nodens may have been particularly worshipped in London which, as 'Lludd's town' was said to have been named after him.

My paws are having problems tonight with the formating of this blog so excuse me if a go astray. I promised regular readers a dip into one of my favourite books..."The Hounds Tale" by Neil C MacArthur.

Here you can can see at the top the front cover...The sparrow is called Twopence. Then the next picture is the back of the book which if you click on it tells you about the adventures of Luath and Sparrow. Then the last picture is the first page of the book, again just click it to read the text which I hope Mr Neil won't mind me reproducing here...I do hope you will go out and buy it.

Due to technical and work commitments, (Andy has been away with the laptop) we haven't been blogging for a whilst...But as our friend Rogue in Scotland says...."The Adventures will Continue"
I know that it is now the middle of our so called Summer (Late June) but Isla and myself were just "Slugging and Sniffing" our way through some of Andys Photo Archives when we found this photo of me, taken I believe in our snow covered garden in Wallasey just before Isla moved in with us....and we felt only fair to share it with you all!

Among some other things we found was a copy of Neil.C.MacArthur's wonderful little childrens book "The Hounds Tale". All about Luath the Deerhound and his adventures but that can wait till the next blog before we tell you more..

Bananas

Humans need to work out by offering us the slightest little bit of banana. We will move off the sofa, We will go outside when it is raining, We will get off the bed, all of those things we have problems with, general getting up and out in the mornings is another one.....The old biscuit trick doesen't always work....Bananas, However, are a very different matter....!!!

Additionally if Banana can be had by legal means, the phantom night time fruit bowl robberies might just stop! That also applies to the eggs left out on the worktop....Not that we are saying it is us you understand. We might just (ahem) patrol the premises a bit better. Seeing of any phatoms or otherwise when our masters are sleeping or out and about in the daytime.

Sunbathing in the garden

It had been the most wonderful Easter. Isla an I had had our usual breakfast followed by the spoils found by "Counter Surfing". It was Isla that got it for us...A fine steak that had been left out to defrost on the worktop the night before, we had calculated that it was at optimum eating quality, and we weren't dissapointed. Although we think Andy and Jayne might be, after all we did hear Jayne say it was their fault for leaving it out.

later that morning we had a trot round the block, then home in time for the sun to come out on our part of the yard. A few more minutes here will not go amiss then tea!!

Skellington R.I.P.

Isla and I have as good as finished the Skellington off. At the moment it is being hidden in the house office (under the desk behind the PC).....I think Andy might have silly ideas of putting the "laughing box" back inside with the stuffing , and maybe getting Jayne to sew the torn arm back on.

However Isla has been on several "reccy" missions and tells me that the Skellington is very much on its death bed. She has also had a couple or more brave attempts at getting the old "pile of bones" out so as we can finish off the job...but failed. She has just not got my experience you see.. :-)

Will keep you posted...

The Zen Dog Talks about Sticks

Peace! Welcome to the Zen Den.Sticks?

Ahhhh......Today I'd like to talk to you about the metaphysical stick. What's that you ask?
The metaphysical stick is the pure 'stickness' of the stick. When the bark is gone and physical stick lays before you in a thousand pieces you must contemplate on the Energy of the stick. The best time to do this is right about the time your master walks in and sees millions of decaying and tannic acid saturated stick splinters strewn about the white carpet in the livingroom. Simply get up and walk out of the room being careful to avoid eye contact. Retreat to a quiet corner and think about the pleasure you've gained from that stick.

How has that stick 'experience' changed your life?
Are you a better dog?
Are you hungry?

Ask yourself this. What if that were the last stick on earth? Did you chew it as if it were or did your mind wander? Did thoughts of fetch, tennis balls, meat, cats or the like float into your consciousness? Don't worry if this happens. The next time you chew a stick bring your attention to the stick and work with your panting. Let the thoughts float by like clouds.... you can chase the cat later.....focus on the stick.

Now... go out and get another stick only if you don't hear the vacuum cleaner going in the other room!

This is Isla my new flatmate...She is six months old and her parents live in stoke...today we are planning a mission to Thurstaston woods...see if we can cause some chaos with the locals.

IPOD!!

Well Christmas has been and gone for another year...I really wanted an Ipod but all they got me was a couple of chew toys and a stocking full of sausages and burgers...still its my birthday in 7 months, I can dream..(I think I will have to!!!)
I did manage to lend Toni's Ipod for a whilst...See the pic of me listening to "My Chemical Romance" I personally would have prefered something else to listen to but my claws can't do the "clicker" very well..

Very busy and important!

Just a quick note to say where we are up to...My old sofa has been replaced with a very nice red Ikea job, Mum and Andy really think they can keep me off by leaving an inflatable banana across it ....if only they knew???
But best of all I do like to sneek upstairs and grab ZZZZZ's on their big comfy bed. (see the enclosed pic.

Pics and thoughts...

You know I keep going on about not getting out much on our last holiday....Well, this is a pic of me waiting by the door to get out for a walk...I had even put by best clothes on in the vain hope....but alas, it failed..
There is talk at the moment of us going up to the caravan for the New Year....I remember what happened last year when we were there.....That was a rush visit to the out of hours vet on New Years day, A big needle for me and a big bill for Mum and Andy

My work at the pet store..

This is where I can be found most weekdays 9-5.30, Our family owned pet store. Mum keeps me in the back!...I have a soft spot for the sausages and burgers that are kept at the front...thats when I am awake, Although it doesn't do much for the shop profits!
Aside from this, I have just found that if you type "angus deerhound" into the Google search engine then hit "I'm feeling lucky" it comes straight to this page.

My two day Sofa!!

Well, I said I was looking forward to my next holiday by the beach and Lighthouse. All I got to see was this sofa and a bit of the caravan park....The weather was Awfull!!! Was not going to be fun for Andy or me on the beach.
Thats the English weather in late October for you!
Poor Andy has sniffing and sneezing since we got back on Sunday.

Nice picture of my last holiday in Wales

looking forward to my next holiday this weekend! Lots of running and playing down by the lighthouse on the beach. Will let you all know how we get on. I hope I get the sofa to sleep on this time......Toni had it the whole time we were last in the caravan...had to kick her off in the early hours of the morning!!

"They gave me a bath???"

Look at what they did....It was Sunday morning I had just had breakfast and was enjoying a sleep in the back room....Andy came in offering me a treat ....Strange I thought as I ran upstairs for my biscuit , normally a few tricks then I get it...anyway way before I knew what had happened, the bathroom door slammmed shut, I was trapped!

Half hour later I came out looking like this!!!

Any words of support or advice to stop this happening to others welcome!!.

Woke up Poorly

Woke up very unsteady on my feet...Mum rang the vet and made a emergency appointment for me as she was worried.....Andy was working away so he didn't see me. As soon as I found out the vet might be around I soon got better, I have been on the recieving end of that thermometer thing before and I'm not in a hurry to go back for more.
The appointment was cancelled!!

I Bit Andy!!!

Feeing a bit better today...though I think it is due to the tablets the vet gave me....Better that than the jab, that "really" hurt!!
I have worked out the sound of the tablet jar means I get treats....In my rush for the chicken slices I got my teeth mixed up with Andys fingers.
If you are reading this Andy...I am sorry!

Poorly today and yesterday!!!!

Didn't go to work at the petshop today....Had to stay at home with Toni, She was asleep all morning so had to wee in the hall...
